Denby Delf Botanical Survey

Report by M. Jill Lucas

Site Description: Field One
Grid Reference: SE217077, Date of Survey: August 6th 2007
This grassland has remained uncut for a number of years; consequently the taller, coarser, broad-leaved grasses have taken over at the expense of the fine-leaved species. However, there is a damp area containing a number of Rush species and also Wild Angelica. There is quite a large colony of the infrequently recorded Betony, many patches of Field Scabious and a small colony of Common Spotted Orchid (Grid ref. SE219072). In addition, Quaking Grass and Glaucous Sedge are indicative of a neutral or limestone soil. Upwards of twenty Small Heath butterflies were recorded.

Site Description: Field Two
Grid Reference: SE215075, Date of Survey: August 6th 2007
The ground is very rough and uneven and the sward has not been managed for some time. Rough grassland predominates with small areas containing Betony and Field Scabious. There is a large colony of the locally rare Smooth Tare. A piece of corrugated iron in the field made a refuge for a toad; another toad was recorded beneath a piece of wood, whilst a third piece was unproductive. It would be worth retaining these for the amphibians.
